As a garden plant lavender works on many levels, from old-fashioned
cottage style to making a contemporary statement planted in rows or patterns,
in single colour blocks or as a simple filer for a formal parterre. People love
lavender because it seems to evoke fond memories of childhood and the lazy days
of summer. There’s nothing quite so amazing in the garden as a lavender-lined
path with the plants just billowing over it and the gorgeous scent and sound of
bees!
While the old areas of large-scale commercial lavender growing have all
but vanished in places like Mitcham in Surrey and Hitchin in Hertfordshire, a
few English farms remain such as the old established Norfolk Lavender and now
some small new enterprises, including Carshalton Lavender, have sprung up as
farmers diversity their crop growing.
